Ardley Salver and Balgove Competition fall Foul of the Weather

The Ardley Salver and the Balgove 9-hole competition scheduled for Sunday 30 November were cancelled due to the courses being frozen over.

Although the sun was shining the cold temperatures prevented any thaw and the courses remained closed throughout the day.

The Ardley Salver will not be played this year and the next competition for the Winter Coaching Group will be the Renwick Trophy scheduled for 29 March 2009 on the New Course.

SALJGA intend to organise a replacement Balgove competition on 29 March 2009.

SALJGA visits Royal Aberdeen Golf Club

A SALJGA team captained by Alan Whitelock journeyed to Royal Aberdeen Golf Club on Sunday for their match against Paul Lawrie’s Golf Foundation.

Unfortunately, SALJGA were unable to maintain their unbeaten run this season and lost by the odd game in a close fought and very enjoyable match.

The tie was played over 9-holes with a shotgun start in excellent weather, which was in sharp contrast to the recent rain and gales.

On the SALJGA side were Alan Whitelock and Jon Price who lost 2 and 1, Blair Morrison and Euan Graham who won 2 and 1, Alasdair McDougall and Sam Heggie who lost by 2, Fraser Hayles and Murray Watson who won 5 and 4 and Ross Woods and Ryan Fenton who lost 2 and 1.

All the pairings played well but in the final analysis the number of strokes awarded to the opposition proved decisive.

Paul Lawrie was playing in the final round of the Castello Masters in Spain but his son Michael was on the opposing team and his wife was there to support.

The Challenge Tour team finished runners up to Grange in the scratch competition and the Mini-Tour team won the handicap event by a country mile

The Challenge Tour was represented by James White, Andrew Whyte, Matt Bones and Rachel Hanlon and the Mini-Tour team comprised Fraser Hayles, Alan Whitelock, Jon Price and Lauren Whyte.

There were also teams from Scotscraig, The New Club, St Andrews Club, Drumoig and two teams from Cupar as well as two teams from the hosts.

Congratulations to all who entered and also thanks to Lorraine Clark, St Michaels Golf Club junior convenor, for organising such an excellent team competition.

SALJGA Triumphant in Final Team Match against Scotscraig

SALJGA played Scotscraig Juniors in the second leg of the annual match for the striking Robertson-Philp Trophy on Sunday.

On a fine and breezy afternoon over the Jubilee SALJGA built upon their 2 ½ – 1 ½ lead from the first leg to post a 3 ½ - ½ win and hence a 6-2 win overall.

The team was captained by Dan Bones in his final game for SALJGA and partnered by Callum Graham, posted some blue on the board early on with a 4 and 2 victory over Cameron West and Paul McGregor.

Rachel Hanlon and Matt Bones played extremely well together as a team and continued the winning ways by securing the trophy with a 3 and 2 win against Conell McKenna and SALJGA renegade David Ford.

Ruairidh Robertson and late replacement Tom Flanagan fought from 4 down at the 11th to earn a fighting half against Jordon McColl and Dean Cormack and Stuart McMillan and debutant Blair Morrison kept their heads to win by 2 against Stuart Adamson and Scot Imrie.

This impressive performance marks the end of a very successful season for Team SALJGA who have remained undefeated throughout the season and will prove a tough act to follow next year.

Junior Open and Annual Prizegiving

Sunday witnessed the culmination of a very successful SALJGA season with the final tournaments of the summer and the annual prizegiving.

The conditions for golf were far from ideal with wind and rain accompanied by a drop in temperature serving as a reminder that summer, such as it was, is over and provided a stern test for all the golfers.

The CH tournament was won by Ben Kinsley by 3 points from Rachel Hanlon.

Ryan Fenton won the MT1 boys event with an impressive 43 points from Alasdair McDougall and Lauren Whyte continued her dominance of the MT1 girls field, beating Katie Dobell into second place.

The competitors in the MT2 tournaments seemed oblivious to the wind with the winners posting very impressive scores.  Ross Proudfoot won the boys event with 47 points, and Rebecca Todd won the girls event with a massive 50 points.  Fraser Donaldson and Chloe Donaldson were both very creditable runners-up.

This year saw the first Balgove Junior Open tournament with 21 competitors playing 9 holes in a Strokeplay event for those SALJGA members who have yet to obtain an official handicap.  Keith Bowman and Scott Reid were the boy’s winners and Aimee Rigg and Kelly Donaldson won the girl’s events.

The day was more about participation than winning; the SALJGA Junior Open encouraged a record number of entries with a total of 78 competitors for the four events.

The annual prizegiving and barbeque was held at the Eden Clubhouse and Alan McGregor, General Manager of St Andrews Links, was happy to present over 60 trophies.

Unfortunately, the inclement weather forced everyone indoors and it was difficult to fit all the competitors and parents into the foyer of the Eden Clubhouse. However, it made for a very cosy atmosphere and all the winners appreciated the support.

Callum Graham wins McMillan Trophy

Callum Graham snatched the final trophy of the season prior to Sunday’s Junior Open by one point from Ben Kinsley.

The trophy was a stableford competition played on the Jubilee Course.

Although the conditions were good, only 5 of the 14 players equalled or beat par demonstrating once again how the course always presents a challenge.

Katie victorious in Mini Tour Matchplay Final

Katie Dobell won the delayed final of the girls Mini Tour Matchplay competition against Lauren Whyte.

The evening of the match was fine and dry but it was extremely windy with scenes reminiscent of the Open at Royal Birkdale with the balls refusing to stop on the putting green once affected by the wind.

The match was extremely tight until Katie took a stranglehold in the latter stages of the first nine, winning three holes on the trot to go 2 up at the turn.  Although Katie won the 11th to go 3 up, Lauren fought back well and the match was finely poised at the 16th with Katie only 1 up.  Lauren had the misfortune to find a bunker to lose this hole and the match was over after the 17th with Lauren only managing a half.

Both girls coped extremely well in the difficult conditions but Katie’s stronger hitting gave her an advantage when hitting into the wind which Lauren found impossible to counter.

Euan Graham wins rescheduled McArthur Salver

Euan Graham won the the Mini-Tour 1 McArthur Salver which was played over the Strathtyrum yesterday.

The match had been postponed from its original date due to heavy showers. The rescheduled tournament started in fair weather but the rain returned with a vengeance half way through the round, testing the patience and rain gear of all the competitors.

Euan Graham kept his form throughout the 18 holes to record his second win of the season with an excellent nett score of 57.  He has now cemented his position within the Mini-Tour 1 having won previously in the Mini-Tour 2 category.

There were also fine rounds by Sam Raeside and Lauren Whyte with joint lowest gross scores of 78 in this combined boys and girls competition.

Emma Bowman is ‘Pretty in Pink’

Emma Bowman won the final girl’s medal of the season at the weekend with a nett 59. Nicky Wilson secured the lowest gross.

Not only did Emma win first prize, she also achieved a cut in her handicap.

All the girls were resplendent in pink and started immediately after an extremely heavy shower.  An equally heavy downpour marked the end of the round with all the players enjoying the ‘benefit’ of a cooling shower.

Duffy Salver Victories for David Niven and Rebecca Todd

David Niven won his first tournament of the year by the massive margin of 10 shots.

David's excellent score of 78 gross and 52 nett will undoubtedly keep the handicap committee busy in hacking at his handicap prior to the junior open next month.  Ross Proudfoot also beat the CSS to come in second.

Rebecca Todd won her second tournament of the year with a solid round of 72 nett on a day that was dry and sunny though a little breezy.

Alan Whitelock and Alexandra Tait are the Mini-Tour Strokeplay Champions of 2008

An excellent second round from Alan Whitelock allowed him to snatch the Boys Mini-Tour Strokeplay title from the grasp of Sam Heggie whose outstanding nett 56 on the Strathtyrum gave him the lead after the first day.

The first round was played in awful conditions with low cloud, sea fog and rain showers which tested everyone’s resolve and rain gear.  The second day saw the return of summer for the round on the Eden and Alan’s impressive score of 77 gross, gave him a 4 shot win over the 2 rounds.

Alexandra Tait kept her game together over the two days to win the Girls Mini-Tour Strokeplay Championship by a shot from Chloe Goadby.

The girls event was reduced to a 27 hole competition due to the appalling weather on the first day.  The girls had later tee times than the boys and suffered the worst of the weather.

The standings after the first day were identical to the results of the second round and so the first nine holes have not been recorded in the overall result.

SALJGA earn hard fought draw against Wentworth Juniors in the Yamaha Cup

Wentworth Golf Club journeyed to St Andrews last weekend for the annual Yamaha Cup match against SALJGA which resulted in a close fought draw..

This year the tie was played on the New Course on Sunday afternoon in misty but otherwise ideal conditions.

Wentworth Juniors fielded an extremely strong team which boasted an England under 18s player among their number.  On average Wentworth were slightly older and had slightly lower handicaps but it was hoped that home advantage would assist the SALJGA team in the 4-ball better ball, scratch competition.

The Wentworth boys started strongly and after 6 holes were up in all 4 ties.  Captain James White partnered by Dan Bones found the going extremely tough against Wentworth’s number one pairing of James Boase and Tom Berry whose string of birdies kept James and Dan on the back foot; Wentworth eventually running out winners by 3 and 2.

Sean Thompson and Ewan Gray knitted together extremely well as a team and their strong finish realised a win on the 17th by 2 and 1 over Curtis Griffiths and Aaron Bliss.

Sean Clark and Matt Bones struggled initially but some excellent play in the final third of the match, particularly by Matt who finished level par overall, resulted in a win by 3 and 2 over Charlie Cloke and Liam Crawford.

The only live match left on the course was the second pairing of Alan Tulleth and Iain Watson who went down the 18th one down against Wentworth Captain Sam Pendlelbury and Simon Clement. A half on the final hole would have meant a victory for SALJGA but they were denied by resolute play from the Wentworth pair and therefore the match was halved.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable match with a fitting result and some excellent golf played by all participants.  Next year SALJGA will travel to the green fields of Wentworth to try and go one better and return with a victory.

SALJGA girls meet the First Minister

SALJGA members Chloe Goadby, Emma Bowman, Rebecca Todd, Lauren Goadby and Katie Dobell attended a photo shoot with Alex Salmond at St Andrews Links Golf Practice Centre.

Alex Salmond was at the Links to announce that the Ricoh Women's British Open would return to Scotland on at least five occasions between 2011 and 2020.

St Andrews Links hosted the championship for the first time last year when the worlds number one female golfer, Lorena Ochoa, won the title over the Old Course.

'The success of the 2007 Women's British Open here at St Andrews proved once again that there is nowhere better to stage major golfing events,' said the First Minister at a press conference.

Rory Henretty and Alan Whitelock win high scoring Pairs Competition

Rory Henretty and Alan Whitelock combined well in Wednesday’s Mini-Tour 1 Pairs competition to win by 2 points from Ross Woods and Euan Roger with Chloe Goadby and Sophie Maguire a single point back in third.

The competition was played on the Strathtyrum as a foursomes event with stableford scoring in ideal conditions.

Alasdair McDougall played very well with his last minute replacement partner to reach a score of 41 but after some dispute regarding Nick’s age and his eligibility for SALJGA, the competition committee disqualified their score.

Fraser and Lauren triumph again in Mini-Tour 1

Fraser Hayles won his second M1 tournament of the season and Lauren Whyte captured her third with their respective victories in the Tait Salver on Tuesday.

Although the conditions were dry and sunny, the breeze was deceptively strong which made the Eden Course a tough test for all competitors.

With Lauren now playing in the US Kids Golf World Championship for couple of weeks, next week’s Mini-Tour strokeplay tournament is wide open.

SALJGA grab incentive with first leg victory against Scotscraig

SALJGA played at Scotscraig in the the first leg of an annual two leg match against Scotscraig Juniors last Friday and managed a hard fought aggregate lead that will be taken into the second leg.

Captain Shaun Clark and Stuart McMillan managed an excellent half against Jordan McColl and Ross Burnett in a match that never realised more than a single hole difference.

Andrew Whyte and Ben Kinsley were giving a generous number of shots to their opponents Dean Cormack and William Finlay and were behind for the majority of the match.  However, a stunning final few holes ensured a win for SALJGA.

Ruairidh Robertson and Fraser Hayles were comfortable against Josh Driscoll and Callum Ness but Iain Watson and Callum Graham faced much sterner adversaries in Conor Finlay and Scotscraig captain Paul McGregor and were unable to add to the SALJGA points total.

SALJGA lead by 21/2 to 11/2, though I expect the visitors to field a stronger team for the second leg on Sunday 21st September.

Euan Graham and Emma Bowman victorious in Ronaldson Trophy

Euan Graham won the boys Mini-Tour 2 Ronaldson Trophy played on the Strathtyrum with an impressive nett score of 61.

The girls competition was won by Emma Bowman who won by two shots from Rebecca Todd.

The conditions posed by the strong cross wind were very challenging and caused some major problems with balls seeking shelter in some of the pot bunkers and then refusing to leave.

Shaun Clark wins 36 hole Sommerville Trophy.

Shaun Clark has won the Sommerville Trophy by two shots from Euan Gray.

The Sommerville trophy was played over two rounds on the same day, with the first round on the Eden followed by 18 holes on the Jubilee in the afternoon.

Scores were relatively high for both rounds due exceptionally blustery conditions.

The lowest gross was won by Iain Watson with a total of 157 on count back from Ewan Scott and Shaun Clark who all carded the same score.

Sam Raeside captures the Boys Mini-Tour Matchplay Title.

Sam Raeside beat Euan Roger to win the Mini-Tour Matchplay competition in a final that had been re-scheduled from the previous week due to torrential rain on the planned date.

Although dry, the wind was extremely strong and at times both players struggled to cope in the blustery conditions.  That notwithstanding, both boys played some excellent golf though Sam was able to harness the wind slightly better than Euan and took an early lead which he never relinquished.

The competition was well supported and played on the Eden throughout which provided an excellent test for the competitors and resulted in some very close matches; particularly the semi-finals which were both decided on the final holes.

The Girls final was also postponed due to the weather and has been re-scheduled for Thursday 28th August; girls having much busier social commitments than boys.

Iain Watson wins the Challenge Tour Strokeplay Championship
Iain Watson has won the CH Strokeplay Claret Jug for the second year running.  Iain’s four round total of 294 resulted in a winning margin of 15 shots over runner-up Andrew Whyte.

The first two rounds of this scratch competition were played over the Eden and the Jubilee. After a cut to the top nine, the competition continued on the New and the last round was played on the Old on Friday evening.

Iain held the lead from the first round and increased his advantage during the week with four very impressive rounds returning scores of 72, 75, 73 and 74.  Although there were rounds of 74 recorded by Andrew Whyte and Ewan Scott, nobody was able to match the consistency displayed by Iain who was presented with the trophy in the gathering gloom of the evening in front of the R&A and witnessed by an impressive number of appreciative spectators.

James White wins Challenge Tour Matchplay
The CH Matchplay competition culminated on Friday on the Old Course with a win for James White over Ewan Gray by 5 and 4.

James and Ewan started the final strongly but it was Ewan who took the early initiative and was 2 up after 4 holes.  He then suffered an unfortunate setback when his excellent drive on the fifth mysteriously disappeared after a ‘suspicious looking’ four-ball played the 14th hole via the 5th fairway and he was forced to concede.

James evened the score after achieving a birdie on the 6th and the match remained all square until another birdie on the 9th allowed James to take the lead and reach the turn 1 up.

It was a very good match that was played in an excellent spirit by both players; the final score belies the competitive nature of the game which bar a disappearing ball and a couple of wayward shots would have been a lot closer.

Victory over the Eden

A healthy entry for the Boys' Davidson Trophy witnessed Fraser Hayles emerge triumphant with a nett 66 on a blustery Eden course with Jonathon Regan, competing in his first SALJGA event of the season, coming in second two shots adrift.

The entry for the girls' event was slightly disappointing with only two entrants; however, a solid performance from Lauren Whyte resulted in her second trophy of the year.

McGregor and Kirkcaldy Trophys

Two more SALJGA competitions were played on Sunday 15 June.

The Challenge Tour contested the McGregor Trophy over the Jubilee in ideal conditions though the course proved to be a stern test.  Matt Bones was victorious and his winning net score of 70 was the only one to beat the CSS.  The competition was a family affair with Matt’s elder brother Dan returning the lowest gross.

The M2 Kirkcaldy Trophy was played as a stableford event and the Kirkcaldy name proved a major attraction which resulted in our largest entry this season with 20 participants.  Ross Woods won the boys' event with an extremely impressive 55 points, this outstanding performance will see Ross advancing to the M1 category for future competitions.  Lauren Goadby pipped her sister into second place to claim the prize in the girl’s event.

Congratulations to all the players and particularly to the winners

Challenge Tour boys take on the Strathtyrum

The season is well and truly underway as the Challenge Tour boys competed for the Room Medal over the Strathtyrum. Two rounds were played in sunny but blustery conditions. The game was hard fought by all but it was Ben Kinsley who triumphed as the overall winner and Alan Tulleth who achieved the lowest gross score.
