The Boys’ Mini tour Matchplay competition reached its conclusion on Thursday and went to the final hole on the Eden when Zak Bedford clinched the title from Sean Cowan.
Zak achieved a par but Sean was forced to play a second ball after a wayward drive. Zak had benefited from a bye in the first round and reached the final after close wins against Sean’s brother Ryan in the quarters and Scott Goadby in the semi final. Sean had battled through from the very first round and had beaten Sam Rigg, Ally McDougall and Ewan Anderson to reach the final which was played on a blustery day last week. Both boys struggled to cope with the wind but Zak was proving a little steadier and after the fourteenth he was 3 up with 4 to play. Sean then staged an outstanding fight back and won the next 3 holes to stand on the eighteenth tee all square. Unfortunately, his drive was taken by the wind into the gorse on the right of the fairway and after five minutes searching he had to play his second ball and so couldn’t challenge Zak’s par.
Nick Randerson, Junior Golf Co-ordinator, said, “I’d like to congratulate everyone who took part, the turn out was excellent and Zak Bedford proved a worthy winner.”
